This is one of two tables in the main area of the Fleet House, both of which are likely part of the original furnishings of the building. The other table is 2022X.02.012.

There are two drawers in the base, each of which originally had two drop pulls. This settee now (2023) has one handle (left) on the right drawer and none on the left. The blue upholstery on the seat and back is stained, and the wooden base shows sign of extensive wear. This settee is one of two and these appear in early photographs of the Fleet House. The arms of Bermuda shows a red lion holding a shield upon which is a depiction of a wrecked ship.

NEILSON, JR. Northeast Harbor Fleet Commodore 1951 - 1955-1956 - 1976 Treasurer 1959-1967 Life is Eternal by John Masefield I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side spreads her white sails to them morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, "There! She is gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight - that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There! She's gone," there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There she comes!" [show more]
